Course Description
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the basic concepts and phenomena that govern the nano-scale. Emphasis is placed on the categorization of materials, based on their properties and on their characterization by advanced techniques. The course is highly lab-based and focuses on nanomaterial synthesis methods, considering current advanced applications.
Topics include super-molecular assembly, surfaces and interfaces, carbon-based nanomaterials, hybrid and 1, 2 and 3-D nanomaterials, top-down and bottom-up fabrication methods, as well as microscopy and spectroscopy techniques for nanomaterial characterisation. The course also explores MEMS/NEMS applications, size-dependent mechanical, electrical, magnetic, thermal, and optical properties, and addresses the social, ethical, and environmental implications of nanotechnology.
