On Thursday, May 29, 2025, the proclamation of Professor Yiannis Giortsos, Dean of the School of Engineering of the University of Southern California (USC), as Honorary Doctor of the School of Chemical Engineering of the NTUA took place in the Events Hall of the Administration Building on the Zografou Polytechnic Campus.

The event began with the addresses of the Rector of NTUA, Professor Ioannis K. Hadjigeorgiou and the Dean of the School of Chemical Engineering, Professor Glykeria Th. Kakali. The work of the honoree was presented by Professor and former Rector of NTUA, Andreas G. Boudouvis. The honoree delivered a speech entitled: "Reflections on the Interweaving of Technology and Social Phenomena from the Perspective of a Chemical Engineer".

Yiannis Giortsos is Professor in the Department of Petroleum and Chemical Engineering at the University of Southern California (USC) and Dean of the USC Viterbi School of Engineering. He has contributed significant work in the field of chemical engineering, with an emphasis on fluid flow, transport phenomena, and reactions in porous media, with applications in oil recovery and soil remediation. His contribution to education and research has been recognized internationally with numerous awards and honorary titles. As Dean of the USC Viterbi School of Engineering, Mr. Giortsos formulated and promoted the concept of "Engineering+", promoting the idea that engineering can provide human-centered solutions to the great challenges of the time, while he pioneered actions for engineering diversity, resulting in the attraction of demographic groups that were previously underrepresented in engineering.

The School of Chemical Engineering welcomes its distinguished graduate as an honorary doctorate, a title that is a recognition of the excellence, innovation and social responsibility that Mr. Giortsos embodies.
