PlastOmics
Discovery of novel enzymes for the bioconversion of plastics using multi-omics
The overall aim of PlastOmics is the discovery of novel enzymatic activities capable of modifying synthetic polymers, such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), PE and PS, through the screening of fungal strains isolated from petrochemical and plastic-contaminated areas and their subsequent multi-omic analysis, using whole-genome, transcriptome and secretome data. The discovered biocatalysts will be evaluated and characterized for their capability to break and/or modify the target polymers, while the crystal structures of the best candidates will be determined, aiming at elucidating their mode of action.
