George Stephanopoulos is the Arthur Dehon Little Professor, Emeritus at the Department of Chemical Engineering,  Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States.

He was born on June 1, 1947, in Kalamata, Greece. His brother, Gregory Stephanopoulos, is also a distinguished professor at the same university.

Stephanopoulos received his Diploma in Chemical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens in 1970, his master’s degree in Applied Mechanics from McMaster University in 1971, and his PhD from the University of Florida in 1974.

Before joining MIT, he served as a professor at the University of Minnesota and at the National Technical University of Athens. From 2000 to 2005, he held various positions at Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation, including Technical Director from 2000 to 2002.

Stephanopoulos has authored and edited more than 10 books, monographs, and collections. His book on chemical process control is available in English, Greek, and Chinese.

He has served in several distinguished professional roles, including:

• Chair of major systems and control conferences, including the IFAC Symposium on Fault Diagnosis and Supervision, the IFAC Symposium on Intelligent Systems and Process Engineering, and the IFAC Symposium on Dynamics and Control of Process Systems.
• Representative on the Board of Directors of the American Automatic Control Council.
• Director, Vice President, and President of the Information and Systems Technology Division of AIChE.

He has also served as a consultant and as a member of the advisory committee of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization.

He has received numerous awards and distinctions for his contributions to research and teaching. Some of the awards he has received include:

• Camille and Henry Dreyfus Teacher and Scholar Award
• Curtis W. McGraw Research Award from the American Society for Engineering Education
• AIChE Allan P. Colburn Award for Excellence in Publications
• AIChE William H. Walker Award for Excellence in Contributions to Chemical Engineering Literature

The Greek professor is a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
